Sodium hypochlorite solution for fast-acting pool water disinfection.

Sodium hypochlorite in solution — the fast-acting counterpart to TCCA tablets. It disperses immediately and does not add cyanuric acid to the pool, which makes it the usual choice for shocking a pool after heavy bathing loads, algae outbreaks or a storm. The trade-off is that it is unstabilised, so direct sunlight depletes it quickly, and it loses strength in storage rather than keeping indefinitely.

Corrosive. Never mix with acid — the combination releases chlorine gas. Store upright, sealed, cool and out of sunlight, and use reasonably fresh stock, since strength declines with age and heat. Wear gloves and eye protection when decanting.
