Sodium carbonate, used to bring pool pH back up when it drifts low. This matters for more than comfort: below the correct range, water turns aggressive and begins corroding metal fittings, heaters and pool surfaces, and chlorine behaves unpredictably. Soda ash raises pH significantly with relatively little product, which is why pool operators keep it alongside sodium bicarbonate and reach for one or the other depending on whether it is pH or alkalinity that has dropped.

Alkaline — wear gloves and eye protection and avoid raising dust. Add gradually with the pump running and retest before dosing again, as it is easy to overshoot. Store dry, since it cakes badly if it takes on moisture.
